Guess Our Baby's Gender--contest
Written by Erik Gulbrandsen
Friday, 09 February 2007

If you didn't know, my wife is pregnant with our third child (due in July). In the spirit of our OB/GYN exam on Tuesday, I thought I would open up a contest...Guess our baby's gender! Watch the ultrasound (19 weeks) and make a guess. The gender check was done in the first 30-45 seconds.

So, there will be winners and there will be losers, but, nobody will get a prize (sorry, three kids can make one poor). Post your predictions below!

erik

p.s.--those of you that already know (as in, I already told you), you aren't allowed to post a guess!

Evidence Based Medicine Tools
Written by Erik Gulbrandsen
Wednesday, 07 February 2007

I've been wanting to do this for some time, and I have finally gotten around to it. I have made a button on the toolbar that has links to all of the evidenced based medicine tools that the school has purchased for our use. Also, there are links such as MD Consult, PubMed linkout, and Online Textbooks. These links can also be found on my website. The username that you will need to enter is your ATSU username.

Everytime I got the emails about Evidence Based Medicine, I just deleted them. Now that I'm in second year and the school is beefing up our needs for EBM searches, I wish I had started using the EBM searches ealier. Now, here is a very easy way to do this. First years, get started early--your second year classes will have you do this a lot (path, pharm, Women's health, etc...). I just hated having to log into the portal, click on "library", then, go to the "online resources", and finally, choose the EBM source that I always use. So, the toolbar and my website make it fast and easy...

As a note, the Dynamed EBM tool is a trial that goes away at the end of Feb. Let's use it! It is one of my favorite EBM tools (I like STAT!Ref better). I don't want it to go away. I'm so sick of eveybody saying "uptodate, uptodate, uptodate". UpToDate is the least robust of all the EBM tools, and is updated less frequently. SO, why does everybody use it? Ignorance...

Coach of the Year
Written by Erik Gulbrandsen
Thursday, 01 February 2007

My high school cross country and track coach, Brian Kuhlmann (google "erik gulbrandsen" 1600m--I used to run fast) was just awarded the National High School Coach of the Year for Utah. This is such a great honor for him. I'm very proud. I've since lost count of our record, but, I remember that when I was in school our cross country team finished in the top 5 at state 16/18 years. Kuhlmann guided my team to his 7th state championship. I forget the exact numbers, but, I believe that they finished 2nd 5 times. 12/18 years either 1 or 2...not too shaby!

Congrats Kuhlmann!

Breathe-Easy Update
Written by Jonathan Terry
Tuesday, 30 January 2007

From Dr. Puckett:

Dear Concerned Citizens,

Today we have several items to pass along:

1) On Thursday Feb 1 at 10:30 am  we will have a community ribbon cutting
and signage unveiling at Il Spazio to celebrate their new smoke free policy.
Please plan to attend.  It will take just a few minutes.  We need to show
strong community support for a business making the step to go smoke free.
(Attached is a press release, please share with all your address books)!

2) The steering committee for the April Election has been very busy
planning, setting a projected budget and will soon be asking for you help.
In the meantime, please make a list of all family, friends, and others whom
you know will support and vote yes in April.  Also, make a list of people
who may or may not live within the city limits, but who are large
supporters.  We will soon be asking for your help to make April a YES day
for clean air.

3) Please mark your calendar for the evening of Feb 15th.  We are hosting a
visiting presentation from a leading educator and researcher in the
smoke-free/clean air realm.  He will be speaking at 7pm.  Watch your email
for more information to follow.

4) If you have any special talents, resources, etc that can help this
campaign, please let us know.  For example, we need help with the design
work for our yard sign and brochures and would really appreciate it if
someone has a graphic design background and could help.  Let us know what
talents you can offer!!

5) The ordinance that citizens will vote on in April is available online at
www.kirksvillecity.com.  There is a link in the middle of the home page.
(Attached is a copy of the ordinance)

Thank you for your continued interest and support!

My fellow students,

I have added www.guideline.gov to the list of searched websites on my google search engine.  So, now, we have these sites (I will add more as I come accross them):

http://guideline.gov

http://acog.org

http://www.timi.org/

www.medscape.com

http://emedicine.com

http://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

http://nlm.nih.gov

I hope this helps your "evidenced-based searching".
