I just found out that the infectious diseases course isn't having wet labs, which makes your microscopes useless for 2nd year. I guess there are people that are wanting a refund of their money for the scope rental for second year. I have mixed feelings about the issue.
First, the contract that the students made with APO is for a two-year rental. This contract is not a contract with the school, but with APO. What the school does and what APO does should be mutually exclusive. APO has no say over how much or how little the microscopes are used during the second year. Suppose that APO were not a university sponsored club, but a national scope rental organization; there is very little chance that a full refund would be awarded because one didn't happen to need the scope for the second year. If you sign a two-year deal with verizon and decide that you don't need a cell phone for the second year, you are still bound to your contract.
Secondly, I feel that there should be some refund of monies based upon the tennants of the club. The club is based upon the Boy Scouts of America. Even though it has been over ten years since I've worn my uniform, I still remember that "a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, curteous, kind..." Everyone of those attributes from the scout law would suggest that APO should provide a refund.
I guess time will tell if our local APO leaders embrace the scout law, or if they follow the demands of the market (let's face it, any organization that grosses over $15,000 a year is a business and succumbs to the market forces). Here's the question I've had for months...does the organization have a non-profit status, or do they pay federal and state taxes? That might also dictate their next move.
